Masterklass #21: Rakka’s Caribbean Triangle

Red Bull Elektropedia Masterklass is not just another random mixtape series. Every episode tells the story of a love affair between a DJ and a certain genre, era, label or any kind of subject matter interesting enough to be turned into a proper mixtape. We select the DJs and musicians based on their knowledge of (and enthusiasm for) music - giving them absolute freedom to show off their insights. Subscribe yourself to our Masterklasses today and get a PhD in music sciences tomorrow.

Ever participated to a dancehall reggae party on the Carribeans Islands? If you haven't, Rakka is here to fill that gap. More than 15 years ago he started to collect and practice his turntablism skills. For his Masterklass he takes on a hot trip to his favorite part of the world. Not only are we traveling in space, but also in time. His mix begins in the sensual newskool Soca vibe, an offshoot of Kaiso/calypso, with influences from Cadence-lypso, Soul, Funk and Indian musical instruments. Later on in his Masterklass, Rakka takes it back to the roots of the genre: dancehall turntablism. He goes scratching oldskool dub plates on a high speed riddim juggling, alongside the underground hits that mashed up basement parties all over the world.
