Masterklass #16: Back To The Old Skool by 4T4

Red Bull Elektropedia Masterklass is not just another random mixtape series. Every episode tells the story of a love affair between a DJ and a certain genre, era, label or any kind of subject matter interesting enough to be turned into a proper mixtape. We select the DJs and musicians based on their knowledge of (and enthusiasm for) music - giving them absolute freedom to show off their insights. Subscribe yourself to our Masterklasses today and get a PhD in music sciences tomorrow.

Number 16 is served by 4T4: "For some reason, I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to go back to where it all began for me. I remember listening to nothing but rap music for a couple of years in the '80s. The tracks in this mixtape really transport me back to those days, when I was completely submerged in and obsessed by stuff like this. It's both the start of my all-consuming, lifelong obsession for music, as well as the start of my love for vinyl and of course DJing. Although it's not just rap that forms the foundation for everything that came after - there's also disco and early house - I do feel like it's the most prominently present. I also feel like it's less acknowledged, which is another reason for turning attention towards it, 'cause this shit rocks hard. The raw energy of these early days in rap has never been repeated since."
