Every year, Red Bull Elektropedia and badman selector Lefto join forces to showcase a new batch of fresh Belgian beatmaking talent that’s ready to show the world what they have up their sleeves. On Sunday October 7, Concertzaal Vooruit will be the scene for night full of exciting discoveries that cross the classic boundaries. No less than 8 different bedroom artists have been selected, each of which has a different sound, a different vision and a different story. This is the part where we shine a light on some of those. To warm you up for what’s about to hit you next week, Lefto sat down with these young prodigies to talk shop. First up: the Latin flavours of Susobrino.
Where do you live? Is this a good place to expand your creative horizons?
I live in Hasselt now, where my inspiration exploded, mostly because of my friends over there.
When did you first start to make music? Which instruments did you use?
I had other projects before this one, but for Susobrino, I started out with field recordings and traditional instruments from South America – about 3 years ago now.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
At the moment: Dengue Dengue Dengue and Natureboy Flako. Other than that, traditional music really.
In which ways do you create your own sound? What makes yours stand out from the rest?
My music is mostly based on the use of field recordings and the fusion of Latin American and other exotic cultures. I went to my mother’s country of Bolivia last year to record sounds from the jungle, the cities, the culture, etc. I’ve put all of these in my Ableton and that’s how my debut album was born. I see my music as a bridge between Latin and Western culture.
What can we expect from your live show?
My debut EP was a little serene, but I’m going to be a little more aggressive now. It will be very dynamic, with live instruments, live percussion and the flute. All of that in full Latino spices.
Are you looking forward to playing your music in front of a large audience at Vooruit?
Absolutely. I’m mostly curious about how people will react.
