Made In Belgium: Louislava

Every year, Red Bull Elektropedia and badman selector Lefto join forces to showcase a new batch of fresh Belgian talent that’s ready to show the world what they have up their sleeves. On Sunday October 7, Concertzaal Vooruit will be the scene for night full of exciting discoveries that cross the classic boundaries. No less than 8 different artists have been selected, each of which has a different sound, a different vision and a different story. This is the part where we shine a light on some of those. To warm you up for what’s about to hit you next week, Lefto sat down with these young prodigies to talk shop. Up next: the chilled-out, sample-heavy hip hop vibes of Louislava.

Where do you live? Is this a good place to expand your creative horizons?

"I’m from Ghent. There are a lot of cool things happening there, but it seems that many of those are up the same alley. In my opinion, it looks like there’s more space to do different kinds of events and music in places like Brussels. That said, Ghent is a great place to develop your creative mind. I have a lot of friends who are musicians and I’m currently finishing my studies at the Conservatory, so it’s totally possible for me to rent a room and jam around with friends all day."

When did you first start to make music? Which instruments did you use?

"I started out playing the jazz drums when I was 13 years old – and I still do that today. In the meantime, I picked up Ableton, fooling around a little bit. As I got older, I gradually took producing music more seriously. Since last year I’ve been making new material every single day."

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

"There’s not one source. In recent times I’ve been getting inspiration from guys like DJ Harrison, Kiefer and a lot of old and modern jazz artists. Then again, I also listen to a lot of techno and house, so it could come from anywhere, really."

How do you create your own sound? What makes yours stand out from the rest?

"I always try to create my own sound. Usually, I’m just toying around for a few hours, a kind of jam session with myself. And then something will stick out after a while. Sometimes I have this melody in my head, which I will try out in many different ways. The result is often something completely different. In the end, it will always sound like ‘me’."

What can we expect from your live show?

"I believe it will be a party! There will be a few chill tracks, but then there are some party tunes to balance it out. In the future I’d like to perform with a live band, but for now I’m using the SP-404, sampling everything and putting live effects on them. Maybe I’ll bring in an extra bass or keyboard."

Are you looking forward to playing your music in front of a large audience at Vooruit?

"I’m looking mighty forward to it! I’m incredibly curious and thankful for the opportunity!"
